How to fix video card thrashing in Windows 7?

I'm running a Mobile Intel 4 series express chipset with a 3.6 rating in windows and every couple of days under performance issues I get a message saying desktop manager is experienceing heavy resource contention and thrashing as a result. I want to be able to run aero and all that stuff but how do I fix this issue and is it hurting my computer. Please help. I want ti fix it without turning off aero. Thanks for the replies.
